| GM Holden probably based the
series 1 Sandman decal stripes from the 1970 Pontiac Judge. Also along with the stripes
came the "GTS" style rims which were released on the 1968 Pontiac GTO. A lot of
other noticeable features from this US car are also evident on other Holden models. For
starters the body shape is extremely similar to that of the HQ 2 door Monaro. The chrome
strip along the sill is evident on the Premiere and Statesmen models. |

1970 Pontiac Judge
|
| In early 1972, GM Holden built a
special show Ute for display and advertising purposes. The Ute called the E'wet had a
factory fitted 350 V8 with air con and power steering. It rolled on Honeycomb rims which
weren't released until the HX GTS series which was 4 years later. The Ute had a set of
narrower pin stripe decals which were very similar to the Pontiac Judge's and could have
been a prototype decal for the Series 1 Sandman pin-stripes. |

The Series 1 Sandman decals
featured a Sandman logo on both sides of the Panelvans and Utes. (On the B pillar, above
the quarter panel line). They also featured distinctive side pin-striping and also a
tailgate 'framed block' on the utes only which was a narrow strip along the bottom in the
same colour as the other decals.
These decals came only in 2 colours, black or white.
1) Black decals were fitted to: yellow, orange, red, brown,
gold, and green sandmans (Most factory material featured a yellow and orange/red Sandmans
that had black decals). 2) White decals
were fitted to: only blue models as far as I am aware of. |
